An Era Comes to a Close: Bidding Farewell to Legendary Columnist Rabbi Menachem Klugman ZT"L

The Haredi world and the landscape of traditional journalism bow their heads in mourning following the passing of Rabbi Menachem Klugman zt"l, the dean of Hamodia journalists, at the venerable age of 90. Rabbi Menachem, one of the shining figures of classic Haredi journalism, leaves behind a rich legacy of sharp writing, steadfast dedication to pure Torah outlook (hashkafa), and true self-sacrifice for his sacred work until his very last day.

The Pen That Never Rested

One of the most remarkable traits of Rabbi Menachem's life was his uncompromising devotion to his public and journalistic mission. Even though he lost his eyesight and grew physically weak in recent years, he refused to lay down his pen. With an indomitable spirit and rare depth of thought, he continued to formulate his articles and dictate them consistently to his son, Reb Bentzion Klugman. As recently as last Friday, on the eve of Shabbat, readers were still able to study his final column, titled "The Left is Convinced of Its Victory."

The Mythological Column: "Ipha Mistabra"

For decades, Rabbi Menachem served as a prolific writer for the Hamodia daily, writing under the pen name M. Navon, among others. His name is forever linked to the iconic journalistic column "Ipha Mistabra" ("On the Contrary"), where he brilliantly articulated the stance of Orthodox Judaism on contemporary issues with eloquence, sharpness, and wit. His writing served as a public compass, shaping the worldview of Torah-observant Jewry while remaining completely subservient to the guidance of the Gedolei Yisrael ( Torah leaders).

Key Pillars of His Character:

  • Torah Dedication and Fear of Heaven: Alongside his journalistic work, he was an exceptional Torah scholar who knew the entire Shas by heart and was a pillar of the Gur shtiebel on Strasser Street in Bnei Brak.

  • Public Service: For many years, he served as Deputy Chairman of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Religious Council on behalf of Agudath Israel, standing at the forefront to safeguard the walls of religion, Shabbat, and kashrut in the bustling city.

  • A Journalistic Dynasty: He was the proud father of the renowned Haredi author and researcher Reb Bentzion Klugman, author of the historical-Torah series Or Zeroa L'Taddik.

His funeral took place in Bnei Brak, passing through the Gur Beis Medrash on Strasser Street before proceeding to the Kiryat Shaul Cemetery, where he was laid to rest.
